VIAQUATRO, the concessionaire that operates Line 4/Yellow of the São Paulo metro, has signed a financing agreement worth Reais 1.25bn ($US 250m) for the construction of a two-station, 3.3km extension.
ViaQuatro’s parent company, Motiva, secured financial backing from government-owned bank Caixa Econômica Federal under its Pró-Transporte programme. This involves providing corporate guarantees proportional to each shareholder's stake in the Line 4 project until construction is completed.
Last September, the São Paulo state government, through its Secretariat for Investment Partnerships (SPI), signed an addendum to the concession contract with ViaQuatro to allow for the extension of Line 4 to the municipality of Taboão da Serra, the first time the metro will operate outside the city of São Paulo.
The addendum formalises the extension of the concession period by 20 years in recognition of the Reais 1bn that ViaQuatro will invest in the project. The remainder will be provided by the state government and loans from the World Bank, totalling approximately Reais 3bn.
