TAOYUAN City Government has launched preliminary construction of the 11.4km MRT Brown Line.
Taoyuan’s mayor Chang San-cheng says the objective is to minimise the impact on traffic and citizens' lives during the main construction phase by completing various preliminary tasks ahead of schedule, while also striving for overall construction efficiency. Initial work includes land levelling, demolition of the Jisheng overpass, and the relocation of trees.
The Taiwan government approved a budget of $NT 45.6bn ($US 1.4bn) for the project in January. Taoyuan City Government awarded the electro-mechanical systems contract earlier this month and is currently preparing civil engineering contracts for the underground and elevated sections.
The Brown Line will connect Taoyuan with Guishan and Huilong in New Taipei City. The line will comprise a 6.1km underground section with five stations and a 5.3km elevated section with three stations.
Once completed, the journey between downtown Taoyuan and Huilong in New Taipei City is expected to take about 18 minutes.
The MRT Brown Line is an important part of Taoyuan's Three Centres and Six Lines Tier 1 rail network. The 52.3km Taoyuan MRT A Line opened in early 2017 followed by an 800m extension in 2023. Construction of the 27.8km 21-station Green Line started in October 2018 and will feature driverless operation at Grade of Automation Level 4 (GoA4).
