SIEMENS Mobility has been awarded a contract to supply CBTC signalling for the under- construction extension of metro Line 4/Yellow in the Brazilian city of São Paulo. Trains will operate at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) on the extension that will run for 3.3km from Vila Sônia to Taboão da Serra with one intermediate station at Chácara do Jockey.

The contract has been awarded by Motiva, the parent company of ViaQuatro, which holds the concession to operate Line 4. The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Siemens will supply Trainguard MT CBTC, an electronic interlocking system, and telecommunications and operational supervision systems. Six trains will be equipped with CBTC, which has been in operation on the fully automated Line 4 since its first section opened in 2010.

The interlocking system will be provided from Germany, the CBTC system from France, and some components of the telecommunications system from Italy. Final integration will take place in Brazil.

The extension will take the total length of Line 4 to 16.1km, crossing the São Paulo city boundary to serve over 280,000 residents in the Taboão da Serra district. It is expected to carry 110,000 passengers a day. The 12.8 km Line 4 from Luz to Vila Sônia currently carries 740,000 passengers a day, with trains operating at headways as low as 1min 30sec.

CPTM contract

Separately, commuter operator São Paulo Metropolitan Trains (CPTM) has signed a contract with Alstom for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a complete signalling system for the new Mauá Norte yard. Built by CPTM between Mauá and Capuava stations on Line 10/Turquoise, the new yard has six tracks for train formation and stabling.

Alstom will supply an electronic interlocking, lineside equipment for operating and controlling points, colour light signals and train occupancy detection. The contract also covers the supply of auxiliary subsystems including CCTV, an access control system, telecommunications infrastructure and radio communications, with all work to be completed within 18 months and covered by a two-year warranty.

There will be a local control centre at the yard and two remote supervision posts, fully integrated with the Line 10 operations control centre. In place of manual procedures and reliance on operating rules, the fully signalled yard will provide control staff with real-time visibility of track occupancy, helping to prevent operational conflicts with the main line.
