PRAGUE Transport (DPP) has awarded a construction contract for the next phase of the 10.6km Line D project to build a new fully automated metro line.
The contract covers construction of the section between Olbrachtova and Nové Dvory and has been awarded to a consortium comprising Subterra, Hochtief CZ, Hochtief Infrastructure and BeMo Tunnelling. The consortium submitted a winning bid of Koruna 29.99bn ($US 1.45bn) for the contract.
Work includes three new underground stations and nearly 6km of tunnels, and will extend the line south from the 3.3km Pankrác - Olbrachtova section currently under construction. DPP has formally instructed the contractor to commence work, with construction expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The contract award follows the resolution of legal challenges to the tender process. Decisions by the competition authority and the Supreme Administrative Court cleared the way for DPP to proceed, enabling the project to move into the next delivery phase.
Completion of this section is scheduled for 2032, following completion of the initial Pankrác - Olbrachtova section in 2029, which is being delivered by the same consortium under a separate Koruna 13.75bn contract. Work on this section commenced in 2022. The complete project is expected to cost Koruna 86bn.
Further contracts are expected to be awarded to extend the line north from Pankrác to Námĕstí Míru in Prague city centre, and south from Nové Dvory to Dep Písnice where a new depot will be constructed. Lines D and C will share a fleet of 69 driverless five-car trains, with the existing 22.4km Line C also set to be upgraded to fully automatic operation. A new single-track tunnel will connect the two lines at the interchange at Pankrác.
A tender to prequalify bidders for a contract to automate the two lines at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), supply the new fleet and provide 35 years of maintenance was issued in April 2024.
