HONG Kong’s government has given MTR approval to commence detailed planning for the 7.5km South Island Line (West) project.
The new line will serve the southwestern part of Hong Kong Island, extending south from Hong Kong University on the current Island Line, to Queen Mary Hospital and the coastal settlements of Cyberport, Wah Fu, Tin Wan and Aberdeen to Wong Chuk Hang on the existing South Island Line. The new line, which will run mostly underground or elevated will serve around 130,000 passengers daily and is expected to open in 2034.
Cyberport is a tech hub and housing development which has been built in phases since 2000. Wah Fu is a 1950’s housing estate that is due for redevelopment in the next few years, and planning is likely to be informed by construction of the new line. Tin Wan and Aberdeen are long-established residential areas on the north side of Aberdeen Harbour.
MTR says it will aim to minimise disruption and the environmental impact of construction work. “We will maintain close collaboration with the government and communicate with local communities to support the expected construction and completion plans,” says Dr Jacob Kam, MTR chairman.
