SINGAPORE’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the final civil works contract for Phase 2 of the Cross Island Line, together with a separate contract for the underground metro line’s power supply system.

The $S 199m ($US 152m) civil works contract for the design and construction of 2.8km of tunnels between Maju and Clementi stations was awarded to Sinohydro Corporation. LTA says the contract completes its appointment of contractors for the nine civils contracts for Phase 2.

The twin-bore tunnels, each 1.4km long, will be constructed predominantly through hard sedimentary rock, for which a slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be used. Real-time monitoring and safety measures will be implemented during the tunnelling.

Construction is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2024 and it is planned to open the 15km Phase 2, which will have six stations, in 2032.

Power supply contract

A separate contract, valued at around $S 400m, has been awarded to a joint venture between Siemens Mobility and Concord Corporation for the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the power supply system.

As well as 66kV and 22kV ac systems, the traction power supply system will be designed for 1.5kV dc to meet the operational requirements for the high-capacity line.

Siemens Mobility has also been awarded the contract for the Cross Island Line overhead conductor rail system.

The Cross Island Line is Singapore’s eighth metro line. It will run east-west from the Changi area east of Changi Airport via Pasir Ris, Hougang and Ang Mo Kio to Bright Hill. Almost half of its stations will be interchanges with other metro lines.

The fully underground Cross Island Line is being constructed in three phases. Phase 1, which was first announced in 2019, is 29km long and has 12 stations. Construction is underway and Phase 1 is expected to be completed by 2030. Engineering studies for Phase 3 have started.
