METRO operator MRT Jakarta is to start tendering in the fourth quarter of this year contracts to build the 24.5km first section of the East-West Line. This will run from Medan Satria in Bekasi City to Tomang in West Jakarta.
Expected to cost Rupiah 50 trillion ($US 3.1bn), the first phase of Stage 1 of the East-West Line will have 21 stations, with 13 serving the 15km eastern section of the line and the remaining eight underground. The project also includes construction of a new maintenance depot. The total length of the East-West Line is expected to be around 84km.
Following an official launch ceremony in September 2024, preparatory work for the project is underway, including land clearance, utility relocation and other early-stage activities. Tendering is expected to be completed withing 12 months, which would enable a groundbreaking ceremony to be held next year.
According to construction director, Weni Maulina, MRT Jakarta has awarded Japan Management Consultant Association (JMCA) a contract to provide consultancy services during the tendering process.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) is lending the government of Indonesia up to Yen 140.7bn ($US 900m) for Phase 1 of the East-West Line. This ties the main contract to Japan and will see the use of Japanese technology, including tunnel boring machines (TBM), rolling stock and signalling.
While Japanese companies are therefore expected to be given priority, Maulina says that they will be required to partner with local Indonesian contractors.
“By the fourth quarter, possibly October or November, we will announce the tender, and it will be international,” Maulina says.
