THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore has awarded the final civil works contract for the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e) metro project to the local branch of China Railway Tunnel Group. The contract covers the section between the line’s current terminus at Bukit Panjang and the sole intermediate station on the extension, currently known as DE1.
LTA says that the design and construction contract is worth around $S 199m ($US 155.4m). Construction is due to begin in the third quarter of this year, with DTL2e due to open in in 2035.
A twin-bore tunnel 1.8km in length will run beneath Woodlands Road and the flyover of the Kranji Expressway. Tunnel construction will be carried out within a constrained site in close proximity to Bukit Panjang station, and LTA says that sensitive work will be undertaken outside operating hours, planned in conjunction with the relevant agencies and Downtown Line operator SBS Transit (SBST).
LTA and the contractor will also implement real-time monitoring of ground stability and other measures to minimise impact on local residents and infrastructure.
The 4km DTL2e will run from Bukit Panjang via station DE1 to its underground terminus known as DE2. This will provide interchange with a new surface station on the North-South Line (NSL), known as NS6 and to be built between the existing stations at Yew Tee and Kranji.
The tunnels between DE1 and DE2 are being built by a joint venture of Woh Hup Engineering and Underground Technology Engineering Construction, under a $S 326m contract awarded by LTA earlier this year.
Under two separate civil works contracts awarded last month, Woh Hup Engineering is designing and building the underground DE1 station for $S 285m, while stations DE2 and NS6 are being built by a joint venture of Samwoh Corporation and the Singapore branch of China Communications Construction Company for $S 450m.
