SINGAPORE’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the first civil engineering contract for the 4km Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e) project. Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of this year.
Valued at approximately $S 326m ($US 255.9m), the contract covers the design and construction of tunnels between the future DE1 station and DE2 interchange station and has been awarded to a joint venture of Woh Hup Engineering and Underground Technology Engineering Construction.
The contract includes the construction of two bored tunnels and a tunnel connection to Gali Batu depot, together with associated work within the depot. Three bored tunnels, each around 1km long and reaching depths of up to 21m, will be excavated beneath Sungei Kadut Avenue, Sungei Kadut Way and Woodlands Road, in close proximity to the existing North-South Line. A cut-and-cover tunnel forming part of a new reception track will also be built at Gali Batu depot.
LTA says that real-time monitoring and mitigation measures will be implemented to ensure ground stability during tunnelling work, in order to minimise impact on surrounding infrastructure.
DTL2e will connect the existing Downtown Line terminus at Bukit Panjang to a new underground interchange station with the surface North-South Line (NSL), between Yew Tee and Kranji stations. There will also be a new intermediate underground station at Sungei Kadut Avenue.
The extension is intended to enhance rail connectivity in the northwest of Singapore, supporting future growth areas including the planned Sungei Kadut Eco-District. Passenger services on DTL2e are due to start in 2035.
