DUBAI’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has invited consultants to bid for a contract to design an extension of the Route 2020 branch of the Red Line, which will run for 3km from its current terminus at Expo 2020 to the West Terminal at Al-Maktoum International Airport.
The project includes the construction of two new stations. According to The Middle East Economic Digest (Meed), bids are due to be submitted by mid-March.
Other metro projects under development in Dubai include the Gold Line, starting at Al-Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai and running parallel to the existing Red Line, which it is intended to relieve. The Gold Line will then run inland to Business Bay, Meydan, Global Village and residential developments in Dubailand, originally planned as the largest complex of theme parks in the world.
According to Meed, RTA awarded Aecom a contract to provide consultancy services for the Gold Line project in October 2025. At a less advanced stage of development are the Purple Line and Pink Line projects, while tendering is underway for studies to update Dubai’s rail masterplan which will inform the development of its metro and light rail networks.
The rail masterplan will support Dubai’s 2040 urban masterplan. This sets the objective of ensuring that journey times to work for all residents are no more than 30 minutes by metro or light rail.
