THE Chinese city of Dongguan in Guangdong province opened the 57.7km Phase 1 of metro Line 1 for trial passenger service on November 28. The new metro line enhances connections to surrounding towns and cities in the Greater Bay Area.
Line 1 runs from Dongguan West station in the northwest of the city, where it provides interchange with the Guangzhou - Huizhou and Guangzhou - Shenzhen high-speed lines, via the city centre to Meitang in the southeast. There is an interchange with the broadly northeast to southwest metro Line 2 at Shimin Zhongxin.
Line 1 has 25 stations and is operated with 120km/h six-car class B trains. Stabling is provided at Huangjiang, near the terminus at Meitang, and there is a depot at Dajiao, near Houde at the western end of the line.
Construction started in February 2019 and was managed by China Railway South Group with work led by China Railway Third Bureau. Interchange is planned with the proposed Line 3 at Guangdong Yiyuan and Songshanhu, as well as with Guangzhou Metro’s proposed Line 28 at Shimin Zhongxin.
Planned extensions to Line 1 include Phase 2, which will serve two new stations and run for 11.2km from Wanghong high-speed station to the Dongguan-Guangzhou border station. Phase 3 will extend Line 1 beyond Meitang by 3.1km with one new station.
Dongguan’s first metro line, the 37.7km Line 2, opened in May 2016, serving 15 stations.
