SEVERAL extensions and new lines entered service on metro networks across China at the end of September, including the second phases of lines 6 and 16 in Shenzhen on September 28, taking the southern city’s metro network to 609km serving 428 stations.

Phase 2 of the branch of Line 6 in Shenzhen, also known as Line 6B, runs for 4.95km from Guangming south to Guangmingcheng, with three new stations. On Line 16, Phase 2 has involved the construction of 9.54km of new infrastructure, running south from Universiade in the northeast of the city to a new terminus at Yuanshan Xikang. There are eight new stations.

Line 6 opened in the city of Xuzhou in northern Jiangsu province on September 28. It runs for 22.9km from Tongshan Hospital in the southwest of the city to Xuzhou East railway station. Line 6 serves 16 stations, with three providing interchange with other metro lines.

Further north in Tianjin, 120km to the southeast of Beijing, the southern extension of Line 7 opened on September 28. The 21.82km extension runs broadly north-south and has 15 stations between Saida Road and Gulou.

The eastern extension of Line 2 opened in Changchun in northeast China on September 28. The 10.6km line has six new stations, running from Harbin Dajie to Wukaihe Dajie. It brings the total length of Line 2 to 35.5km and that of the Changchun Metro to 151.4km with 131 stations.

Guangzhou

In the southern city of Guangzhou in Guangdong province, several new urban rail lines opened on September 29, including the eastern ring inter-city line, which runs for 59.7km from Panyu station to Baiyun Airport North. The new line serves 13 stations, with Panyu directly beneath Guangzhou South high-speed station and also providing interchange with Guangzhou Metro lines 2, 7 and 22 and Foshan Metro Line 2. Seven other stations provide interchange with metro lines.

The new Pazhou - Lianhuashan inter-city line runs for 18.2km from Pazhou on the eastern ring line to Lianhuashan on the Pazhou - Huizhou inter-city line, serving two intermediate stations. Together with the Pazhou - Panyu line, it completes the triangular network of inter-city lines in Guangzhou. The Panyu - Huizhou line has been extended 6.4km northwards from Xiaojinkou to a new terminus at Huizhou North.

On the Guangzhou Metro network, two extensions opened on September 29, including Phase 2 of Line 13, which adds 8.3km and four stations beyond Tianhe Gongyuan, including the new terminus at Yuzhu. Phase 2 of Line 14 runs south for 11.9km from Jiahewanggang to a new terminus at Lejialu, serving eight stations. A new station on Line 11 serving Guangzhou East railway station also opened on September 29.

Completion of these projects takes the total length of Guangzhou’s inter-city lines to 420km, while the city is now served by a 768.4km metro network, the third longest in the world behind Shanghai and Beijing.
