AUSTRIA’s Ministry of Mobility, the state of Upper Austria, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), and the Upper Austrian Transport Holding Company (OÖV) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on March 20 to develop the rail network in Upper Austria.
The MoU supports the shared goal of expanding rail as the backbone of an efficient, climate-friendly, and economically strong transport network. Development of the Linz Regional Light Rail network is a key objective, which will include connecting it to Linz main station and Mühlkreis station.
The agreement also safeguards and aims to develop existing lines in the region. The Almtal railway and the Hausruck railway will remain part of the ÖBB network, with targeted investment planned and based on a long-term financing agreement. Investment projects include the proposed renewal of the Traun bridge in the Wels/Thalheim area as well as the previously-announced plan to electrify the Wels -Sattledt section of the Almtal railway.
The MoU also aims to safeguard the future of the Mühlkreis railway. Negotiations are ongoing regarding the planned takeover of the line by the state of Upper Austria or a subsidiary of OÖV. This follows a comprehensive review of the line’s infrastructure, operating requirements and legal framework. The partners say the goal is to create a viable foundation for investment to sustainably upgrade the line as a key component of a modern regional rail network.
“With this agreement, we are securing the future of regional public transport in Upper Austria and simultaneously creating the foundation for its targeted further development,” says federal mobility minister, Peter Hanke.
“It is clear that attractive connections must be commissioned and financially secured long-term. This memorandum represents collaborative solutions between the partners and ensures that we invest where sustainable and efficient operations can be guaranteed.”
