CONSTRUCTION began on metro Line 2 in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi on October 9. The new line runs from Nam Thăng Long south to Trần Hưng Đạo.
The Dong 35 trillion ($US 1.33bn) project is being funded from the Hanoi’s budget and ODA loans provided by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
The 11km line comprises 9km underground and 1.94km elevated with 10 stations including Quan Ngua Stadium and Ha Noi Botanical Garden.
There will be an 11.3ha depot at Xuan Dinh. The depot will be built under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model which combines public transport interchanges with services, commerce, and mixed-use housing. Hoan Kiem station will form a TOD zone integrating the metro with public areas and preserving heritage.
Line 2 is expected to open in 2029. This will be Hanoi’s third metro following the 13.1km Line 2A, which opened in November 2021, and Line 3 which opened in August 2024. Construction of the 38km Line 5 is expected to start in December.
