WORK is due to start later this year on the next two metro lines to be built in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi. Work will start on October 10 on the 11.5km Line 2 and on December 19 for the 38km line Line 5.
The groundbreaking dates were announced in a directive issued by the Office of the Hanoi People’s Committee. The city authority is now accelerating preparatory work for the next two projects in Hanoi’s 2021-2030 masterplan which contains 14 new lines.
Line 2 will run for 11.5km from Nam Thang Long to Tran Hung Dao, comprising an 8.9km underground section with seven stations and a 2.6km elevated section with three stations. It is expected to cost Dong 35.6 trillion ($US 1.36bn), an increase of over Dong 16 trillion from when the project was first approved in 2008.
At 38km, Line 5 will be the longest on Hanoi’s metro network, running from Van Cao to Hoa Lac. Over 6km of the new line will run underground, with 2km elevated and the remainder at grade, following existing roads in order to reduce property acquisition and land clearance costs. Line 5 will serve a total of 21 stations, six underground and 15 on the surface.
Connecting central Hanoi with major development areas such as the Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park, Vietnam National University’s new Hanoi campus, and the satellite town of Hoa Lac, Line 5 is expected to stimulate socio-economic growth along the city’s western corridor.
Total project cost has been estimated at over Dong 61.9 trillion. This is expected to be provided by loans from overseas development agencies, the city budget and public-private partnerships (PPP).
