THE state government of Lagos in Nigeria has received the first of three new eight-car DMUs for its 27km Red Line commuter service. The cost of the new fleet has not been disclosed.
The trains have been built by CRRC Dalian in China, and were procured through the main contractor for the Red Line project, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The existing Red Line fleet includes two Talgo series 8 trains, purchased second-hand from the United States, and second-hand HST diesel trains acquired from Britain.
The first phase of the Red Line, linking Agbado and Oyingbo, opened in October 2024. A 10km second phase is under construction, connecting Oyinbo with the Blue Line at Marina. In January, the state government confirmed plans to proceed with a 68km Green Line from Marina to Lekki Free Trade Zone.
