Czech Railways reports growth in 2019
CZECH Railways (ČD), the state-owned operator and largest passenger train operator in the Czech Republic, carried 182 million passengers in 2019, a 1.6% increase year-on-year, with passenger-km increasing by 5.6% to 8.685 billion.

DB receives 11,000 applications for 30 trainee driver roles from Spain
GERMAN Rail (DB) has welcomed 30 new trainee drivers from Spain, after running a successful campaign to attract new drivers from outside the country that saw 11,000 Spanish applicants apply for 30 advertised positions.

India announces $US 22.4bn 2020-21 rail budget
INDIA’s finance minister, Ms Nirmala Sitharaman, announced an outlay of Rs 1610bn ($US 22.4bn) for Indian Railways (IR) for the 2020-21 financial year on February 1, including a gross budgetary support of Rs 700bn. This is up slightly from the Rs 1600bn provided for 2019-20.

Arriva’s Czech subsidiary leases Desiro DMUs from Alpha Trains
CZECH open-access operator Arriva Vlaky, a subsidiary of Arriva, will lease five two-car Desiro Classic class 642 DMUs from leasing company Alpha Trains under a 10-year contract from December 2020.

VR Group reports strong passenger growth in 2019
FINNISH operator VR Group carried 14.2 million passengers on long-distance rail services in 2019 a 9% increase compared with 2018. Total passenger-km also increased by 39% during the year as the operator reported a 10% year-on-year increase in passenger journeys to 1.2 million in December.

GERMAN Rail (DB) is set to invest €12.2bn in railway infrastructure in 2020, a €1.5bn increase compared with 2019, as the new 10-year LuFV III government funding agreement takes hold.
