THE government of Brazil’s Federal District launched a tender on July 6 for 15 new trains for Brasilia’s Metro-DF. The contract is worth Reais 1bn ($US 200m) and is part of wider plans to expand and modernise the capital’s metro network.
The tender is based on an open bidding model with lowest price the sole criterion. The deadline for responses is September 15. Contract signing is expected before the end of the year, with manufacturing commencing in 2027 and delivery of the first trains due in 2028.
The new four-car trains will be equipped with air-conditioning, monitoring systems, digital passenger information systems, dynamic maps, and fire detection and fighting equipment. The contract also includes the supply of spare parts, maintenance tools, a driver training simulator, and both on-site and remote technical assistance.
The tender also stipulates that the trains must be CBTC-compatible, although this form of train control is currently only used by São Paulo Metro.
