PERTH’s new $A 1.4bn ($US 840m) 17.5km Thornlie - Cockburn commuter line opened as planned on June 9.
The Australian city's first east-west rail link, operated by Metronet and which includes new stations at Nicholson Road and Ranford Road, connects the Mandurah and Armadale lines. The journey time to and from Perth will be 27 minutes from the former and 31 minutes for the latter.
The new line opened at the same time as a 7km section of the Armadale Line, which had been closed for 18 months to allow the track and five stations to be elevated, at a cost of around $A 1.6bn, freeing up space at ground level for 6ha of new open public space.
"What we're doing is making sure we build our train lines to keep up with our incredible population growth,” says Rita Saffioti, Western Australia’s transport minister.
