QUEENSLAND’s Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) has commissioned Hitachi Rail to deploy ETCS Level 2 on a 20km section of the Gold Coast Line between Kuraby and Beenleigh.
The work is part of the wider plan to introduce digital signalling on 200km of the South East Queensland (SEQ) network. The value of the contract has not been disclosed.
The section between Beenleigh and Kuraby is an important part of the Brisbane to Gold Coast rail corridor and Hitachi is already working on the 50km Beenleigh - Varsity Lakes (B2V) project under the Sequence Signalling and Systems Alliance, a collaboration with DTMR and Queenland Rail.
Hitachi has already installed ETCS Level 2 as a pilot for digital signalling in Queensland on the 11km Shorncliffe line north of Brisbane, with final testing taking place before full deployment by the end of this year.
“We are also developing a new Traffic Management System for the entire SEQ network and introducing a Possession Management System to enhance track safety and improve network access for maintenance crews,” says Sarfaraz Samnakay, managing director of Hitachi Rail Australia and New Zealand.
“These integrated systems, together with ETCS Level 2, form part of the backbone of SEQ’s future digital railway.”
