THE Queensland state government in Australia has awarded Alstom a contract worth $A 114m ($US 81.5m) to supply ETCS Level 2 for Stage 1 of The Wave project, previously known as the Sunshine Coast direct line. This comprises a new 19km double-track line from Beerwah, on the Brisbane - Cairns North Coast Line, to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.
Alstom says this is the first tranche to be awarded under a framework contract worth $A 354m. The company will design, supply, test and commission Onvia Control ETCS Level 2 lineside signalling for Sector 1 North.
The contract forms part of Queensland’s broader ETCS programme, intended to increase passenger capacity in time for Brisbane hosting the Olympic and Paralympic games in 2032. ETCS will be installed on both new infrastructure and upgraded sections of the North Coast Line, “requiring complex integration while maintaining uninterrupted passenger services,” according to Alstom.
As ETCS contractor, Alstom will be working in partnership with infrastructure manager and passenger operator Queensland Rail (QR) and civil engineering contractors. “Strong partnership and interface management across our civil and digital radio system partners will be essential to the project’s success,” Alstom says.
