PRELIMINARY tasks are being undertaken on the major works package for the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail (LGC) project in Queensland, Australia. This will see the 20km Kuraby - Beenleigh section of the Brisbane - Gold Coast line widened from two to four tracks to double capacity and cut journey times.
A design and construction contract for the package, the value of which has not been disclosed, was recently awarded to the ActivUs consortium, comprising Acciona, CPB Contractors, SMEC, UGL and WSP. Last year the same consortium was awarded the design and pre-construction contract for the $A 5.75bn ($US 4.01bn) LGC project, which is being funded jointly by the federal and state governments.
A project alliance agreement was recently signed, formally establishing the LGC Rail Alliance between the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Rail and the ActivUs consortium.
Major construction work is expected to start next year.
