HITACHI Rail has announced the award of a contract to supply digital systems and provide long-term service support for the Ampang Line in Kuala Lumpur, part of the metro network operated by Prasarana. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
Hitachi says that it will deliver a range of digital enhancements, which will include the integration of radio networks for enhanced track-to-train communications. Advanced data analytics will be deployed, enabling real-time fault monitoring, and the automatic train supervision (ATS) system will be upgraded.
The contract also includes maintenance of the signalling and train control system on the Ampang Line for 10 years. Hitachi says that this will support Prasarana in meeting government performance targets and maximise return on investment by reducing reliance on more expensive short-term repairs.
Hitachi has established a Rail Centre of Excellence at Batu Gajah in Malaysia, providing training to transfer expertise in signalling technology to local engineers. Recent work has included commissioning an integrated control centre (ICC) to manage operations on three metro lines and upgrading safety systems on the Ampang Line.
SelTrac communications-based train control (CBTC) on the Ampang Line was supplied by Thales, whose Ground Transportation Systems (GTS) business was acquired by Hitachi Rail in 2024.
