Tokyo to extend Oedo metro line

The project could see a return on the investment within 40 years.

TOKYO’s metropolitan government has published plans to extend the Oedo metro line (Line E) to serve the Nerima Ward, which has an estimated population of 749,450, in the northwest part of the Japanese capital.

The Oedo Line will be extended by about 4km northwest from its current terminus at Hikarigaoka via Doshida and Oizumimachi to Oizumigakuencho, adding three stations to the network.

The cost of the project is estimated at Yen 160bn ($US 1bn).

According to the government, the extension is forecast to attract an additional 60,000 passengers per day. This should generate sufficient income for extension to become profitable 40 years after it opens. This assumes passenger demand will be generated through the development of surrounding areas.
