THE Taiwanese Cabinet approved a $NT 32.7bn ($US 1bn) project to construct an 8.4km monorail in Tainan on October 21. Construction is expected to start by the end of 2026, and the line should open in 2032.
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) gave its preliminary approval in March 2024 concerning the route, system design and estimated construction budget.
The MRT Blue line will run in an arc from Yongkang’s Daqiao area via the city’s busiest districts to the Tainan Cultural Centre, with a branch to Rende. There will be 10 stations, and two of the three terminal stations will connect with mainline rail services.
The government has agreed to provide funding of $NT 19.3bn with the city investing the remaining $NT 13.4bn.
Tainan plans to build another five rapid transit lines in the future.
