BIDs have been submitted by six consortia for the phase 2 civil works package for the new Ringgits 16bn ($US 3.8bn) 29.67km elevated light metro line under construction between Butterworth and George Town and Penang International Airport on the island of Penang in Malaysia.

Known as the LRT Mutiara Line, the project includes the construction of a 3km viaduct across the sea between the mainland and the island, 22 stations and two depots. Trains will have capacity for 400 passengers and will operate at 4-minute headways initially. The metro is expected to transport 10,910 passengers per hour per direction.

The phase 2 package is worth around Ringgits 4bn and covers the 6km section from Butterworth station to Macallum Street in George Town on the island.

The six consortia comprise:

  • Kerjaya Prospek Group, SinoHydro and Power China Group
  • Malaysian Resources Corp and China Railway Engineering (CREC)
  • MMC Engineering, Samsung Construction and an unnamed Chinese company
  • TRC Synergy and China Construction and Communications (CCCC)
  • YTL Group and a unit of CREC, and
  • WCT Holdings, Lion Pacific and China State Construction & Engineering.

Phase 1 of the Penang LRT civil works package is from the reclaimed Silicon Island in Teluk Kumbar to Komtar in the heart of George Town. This Ringgits 7.9bn contract was awarded to Malaysian multinational construction company Gamuda last year.
