QUITO Metro has awarded a preventive and corrective signalling maintenance contract for its 22.5km Line 1 to Alstom for $US 27.2m. The contract has a term of four years.
The contract was the subject of a process in which Quito Metro tendered two core maintenance contracts for signalling and infrastructure with a combined value of up to $US 100m. The signalling tender was issued with a reference price of $US 28.8m with bids due in early February.
Under the contract, Alstom will carry out maintenance of signalling equipment including train control, interlocking and associated lineside equipment that performs continuous real-time supervision of train movements on the line that carries 185,000 passengers a day.
According to the Ecuadorian capital’s municipal authorities, the award “gives continuity to the previously existing service and guarantees permanent maintenance of the signalling system, ensuring a safe and reliable operation of the system.”
The award comes amid ongoing efforts by Quito Metro to conclude long-term maintenance contracts for its core systems. The separate, larger contract covering infrastructure, track, electromechanical systems and telecommunications is expected to be awarded next month.
Line 1 runs from Quitumbe to El Labrador with 15 underground stations and moved into its current phase of operation in late 2023 following earlier commissioning delays. Last month, Quito Metro signed a $US 9.9m contract with Spanish engineering consultancy Typsa which will conduct feasibilities studies for a potential extension of Line 1 from El Labrador to La Ofelia.
