INDIA’s Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 98.6bn ($US 1.2bn) investment plan to construct 31.64km of metro lines in Pune.
The proposed lines 4 and 4A of Pune Metro Phase 2 will add 28 new stations, connecting key IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and dense residential areas in eastern, southern, and western parts of the city.
The 25.5km Line 4 will add 22 elevated stations, running southwest from Swargate on Line 1 and Kharadi IT Park to Khadakwasla. The 6.1km elevated Line 4A will run from Manik Baug on Line 4 north via Warji to Nal Stop on Line 2, adding six stations, and providing an important link between the two lines.
Construction will begin later this month on the Swargate - Katraj underground section of Line 4, says Atul Gadgil of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro), a 50:50 joint venture between the Indian and Maharashtra provincial governments, which operates metros in the state of Maharashtra, including in Nagpur and Pune. Construction of both projects is expected to take five years to complete.
Along with the 23.3km Line 3, which is due for completion in March 2026, the 12.75km extension of Line 2, and 5.64km underground addition to Line 1, both of which are under construction, the new lines will take Pune’s total metro length well beyond 100km.
According to official projections, daily ridership is expected to reach around half a million passengers in 2028, and is expected to grow to over 1 million by 2058 as the network expands.
