SINGAPORE’s Land Transit Authority (LTA) placed into service on July 15 the first two new two-car automated people mover (APM) vehicles for the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit (SPLRT) lines in the northeast of the island.
The rubber-tyred vehicles have been built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). A total of 25 APMs were ordered by LTA in 2022 from MHI and Mitsubishi Corporation and all are expected to be delivered by 2028.
LTA hosted a ceremony to commemorate the start of commercial operations with the new fleet that was attended by Singapore's deputy prime minister. Gan Kim Yong.
The new trains APMs have a similar exterior design to the existing vehicles, but incorporate technical enhancements requested by LTA, including continually recording vehicle data during operation and using this to improve fault-finding and introduce predictive maintenance.
The new fleet has been ordered as the population of the Sengkang and Punggol areas, currently estimated at over 450,000 people, is growing rapidly, and the number of passengers on SPLRT is increasing.
