SUMITOMO Corporation and Nippon Sharyo have been awarded a Yen 17bn ($US 111.8m) contract by Indonesian public transport operator MRT Jakarta to supply 48 metro cars for Phase 2A of the North-South Line. The delivery period for the new fleet of eight six-car trains is 56 months.
The two Japanese companies previously supplied 96 metro cars for Phase 1 of the North-South Line, which entered service in April 2019 as the first metro line in the capital of Indonesia. Sumitomo and Nippon Sharyo say that they have been awarded the rolling stock package for Phase 2A “based on the high evaluation of their achievements in Phase 1.”
Phase 2A will run for 5.8km from Bundaran HI in the centre of the capital to Kota in north Jakarta. There will be six intermediate stations at Thamrin, Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar and Glodok.
The project is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), which is providing an official development assistance (ODA) loan under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) scheme.
In addition to the rolling stock supply contract, Japanese companies have been awarded contracts to undertake civil works on Phase 2A as well as tracklaying and the supply of railway systems.
As part of the metro development programme in Jakarta, Phase 2A is expected to encourage modal shift, reducing road congestion and air pollution.
