A planned eastern extension of Seoul metro Line 9, which will serve the city of Namyangju, has been given the go-ahead by the government.
Korea’s Metropolitan Transport Commission, which reports to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Molit), approved outline plans for the extension on December 24. The project is also known as the Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju Line and will add a further 13.1km to the line beyond a 4.1km extension that was approved in 2023 and is scheduled to open in 2028.
The initial extension will add four stations from the current terminus at VHS Medical Center to Godeok, which is within Seoul’s city limits. Under the latest plan a further four stations will be added, extending the line to the Jinjeop district. The extension will interchange with Line 3, the Gyeongchun Line, as well as the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, and will enable passengers to travel directly from Jinjeop to Sinnonhyeon station in Seoul in just 51 minutes.
The project will cost Won 2.82 trillion ($US 1.93bn) to build.
Gyeonggi province says that it will now take the project forward, including preparing tenders, and hope to complete project design later this year. Approval and the start of work is planned for 2026, with opening scheduled for 2031.
