TESTING of a prototype LRV developed in Thailand has been taking place on a 450m test track located within the campus of Rajamangala University of Technology Isan (RMUTI) in the northeastern city of Khon Kaen.
Known as the Luk Isan Tram, tests of the three-car bi-mode (overhead electric and battery) prototype, which has capacity for 120 passengers, are taking place on straight and curved track to assess the performance of propulsion and braking systems, wheel assemblies and other components developed by the RMUTI research team. Hydrogen propulsion could be added in future.
Also being tested are rail fastening systems and pads for both conventional and grooved rail, in order to ensure that performance and safety requirements are met. The vehicle is expected to enter regular service next year for university staff and students, with an extension of the line within Khon Kaen under consideration.
According to RMUTI, development work has been based on international railway engineering standards, adapting global best practice in design, safety, control systems and maintenance to suit operating conditions in Thailand, with 80% of components produced in Thailand. Research funding was provided over three years by the Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMUC).
RMUTI hopes to establish Khon Kaen, home to the Faculty of Rail Systems and Transportation, as a regional centre for railway education, research and innovation, supporting workforce development and helping to meet the long-term objective of building a self-sufficient rail industry in Thailand.
As well as a prototype evaluation, the test track at Khon Kaen is used to provide university students, staff and researchers with hands-on experience in railway design, manufacturing, installation, testing, maintenance and system management.
According to RMUTI president and associate professor Dr Kosit Sriphuthorn, the trials demonstrate Thailand’s growing capability to design, develop and test rail technology using local expertise.
“We are not only building a LRV but also creating knowledge, developing skilled personnel and laying the foundation for Thailand’s rail industry,” Sriphuthorn says.
