VOSSLOH has been awarded a contract worth over €40m to supply concrete sleepers with rail fastening systems for the 191.5km Central Valley Section (CVS) of California’ future high-speed network, now under construction between Bakersfield and Merced.
This is the first section of a 350km/h high-speed line that is eventually planned to run for a total of 790.4km from San Francisco and Palmdale near Los Angeles. The project is estimated to cost $US 90.8bn.
Vossloh will supply 335,000 concrete sleepers, manufactured at the company’s plant in Pueblo, Colorado, with deliveries scheduled to start in the third quarter of this year. The manufacturer says the new contract will enable it to significantly increase the use of its production capacity in the United States, “following several quarters marked by generally weaker demand.”
The fastening systems are specifically designed to meet the particular requirements of the high-speed project in California. According to Vossloh they will combine high reliability with long service life and low maintenance.
“We are proud to be participating in this first project of its kind in the United States,” says Vossloh CEO, Oliver Schuster.
“It also serves as an excellent reference and foundation for further projects that are already being planned there.”
