CALIFORNIA High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) completed its Southern Railhead facility in Kern County on February 3. The 60.7ha site near Wasco is connected to a BNSF mainline and is designed to support the delivery and staging of materials from across the country required to build the new high-speed line towards Merced.
Construction started a year ago on the site, which includes temporary sidings, material storage and warehouse facilities, maintenance and operations areas, and infrastructure to safely coordinate trains, equipment, and personnel.
“This major milestone reflects the work happening on the ground and a delivery approach focused on partnerships with the state governor and legislature,” says CHSRA CEO, Ian Choudri.
“The railhead facility is a critical step in the track installation process and keeps us on pace to deliver this system smarter, faster and more economically. With procurement underway on laying of electrified track and systems, including new and innovative pathways opening for private-sector investment, we’re building the foundation for long-term success and continued momentum.”
While the Southern Railhead was under construction, CHSRA secured suppliers of long-welded rail and started acquiring other track materials. A contract to undertake tracklaying and supply railway systems was tendered by CHSRA in November, with proposals due by March 2.
“With the completion of the Southern Railhead facility, we’re demonstrating that California isn’t waiting for the future. We’re building it,” says state governor, Gavin Newsom.
