THE 14.5km extension of the Perth Metronet commuter network from Butler to Yanchep has been officially opened, adding three new stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep and offering a total of 2000 car parking spaces.
The journey time from Yanchep to the centre of Perth is 49 minutes. The fare is $A 4.68 ($US 3.15) and travel is free on Sundays.
Serving a population of over 150,000 in Perth’s growing northern corridor, the Yanchep extension is expected to stimulate new employment opportunities as well as residential and commercial development.
The project was first announced in 2017. Work began in late 2019 with the opening taking place nearly two years later than originally planned.
Construction has cost almost $A 1bn, funded jointly by the Australian and Western Australian governments, and is double the original estimate.
The project was delivered by the NEWest Alliance, which includes the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) and a joint venture between DT Infrastructure and CPB Contractors.
“For the tens of thousands of people in our northern suburbs, this means fast, affordable and reliable travel to the city and beyond for the first time,” says the premier of Western Australia, Mr Roger Cook.
