The €189m Overground West contract encompasses the construction of additional tracks and pointwork, two flyovers and a double-track steel arch bridge on the surface section between Laim and Donnersberger Brücke. Planning will begin this month with construction expected to start in autumn 2019.

DB says it expects to award further contracts for works at the western end of the tunnel in the coming weeks.

The second tunnel will relieve the existing line beneath the city centre, which carries up to 60 trains an hour and has reached its capacity limit. The project involves constructing a 14km line from Laim in the west to Leuchtenbergring in the east running parallel with the existing line, with a 7km twin-bore tunnel between Donnersberger Brücke and Munich East Station.
Three new underground stations are planned at Munich Main Station, Marienhof, and Munich East.

The German federal government is providing 60% of the funding for the €3.84bn project under an agreement signed with the state of Bavaria in October 2016.

The second tunnel is due to open in December 2026.
