HUNGARY’s Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM) is tendering a contract to undertake detailed design and construction of Phase 3 of the Budapest S-Bahn project to increase capacity on the Southern Ring line between Kelenföld and Ferencváros for more frequent passenger services.
The contract covers the relaying of 13km of track, rebuilding Ferencváros station, replacing or installing 93 turnouts and the installation of point-heating systems, and work on the overhead power supply and signalling systems. Two bridges over roads will be replaced, and a new flyover built to avoid conflicting movements with trains entering the marshalling yard and locomotive depot at Ferencváros, the largest yard in Hungary. A new station will be built to provide interchange with Budapest Metro Line 3 at Népliget.
The deadline for submitting bids is February 16 and the successful bidder will have 44 months to carry out the work. Funding for the project is being provided by the European Union (EU) Cohesion Fund, and bid evaluation will see up to 70% of points awarded on the basis of price.
The double-track section between Kelenföld and Ferencváros is currently a major bottleneck as it forms part of the main east-west route for transit and other freight traffic, as well as being used by long-distance and local passenger services.
Under Phase 2 of the upgrade, a third track is being built between Kelenföld and the River Danube, where a third railway bridge was built and the two existing structures replaced under Phase 1. East of the Danube, four tracks will be provided towards Keleti station to enable through services to operate to Cegléd, Gödöllő, Vác and other destinations.
