THE local subsidiary of Portuguese civil engineering contractor Mota-Engil has signed a contract worth €820m with Mexico’s Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) to build new tracks for passenger services on a second section of the Querétaro - Irapuato main line.
Mota-Engil Mexico will undertake design and construction on the 70.7km section from Apaseo el Grande to Irapuato. Work is expected to take 29 months to complete.
In August the company signed a €290m contract covering the first 30.3km section of the line, where new track on the Ferromex right of way will provide capacity to accommodate up to 11,000 passengers a day.
Mota-Engil says that it been recently awarded several other railway infrastructure contracts, worth €200m in total. This has taken its backlog in Mexico to €3.7bn, “strengthening its position today as the largest European railway infrastructure contractor,” according to the company.
