KEEPING to its schedule, Mexico’s Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF) announced a consortium of Gami Ingeniería e Instalaciones, Construcciones Urales, Recal Estructuras, and Azvi had been selected ahead of four other bidding groups for the third of four lots to construct the 393.9 km Saltillo - Nuevo Laredo line for passenger operation.
Work is due to commence this month with a target completion date of May 2028.
The contract involves work on 136.48km of line connecting to the international crossing at Nuevo Laredo, the main railway and road link point with the United States.
CICSA and FCC were awarded a $US 1.47bn design and build contract for the 111km second lot comprising the Saltillo - Santa Catarina section last month. This followed the award of the initial $US 780m contract to ICA for the 100km Unión San Javier - Arroyo El Sauz lot in August.
Lot 4 has not yet been defined but is expected to cover the remaining 50km of the line between Santa Catarina and Unión San Javier.
The 393.9 km Saltillo - Nuevo Laredo line, an active CPKC freight corridor, is central to the federal government’s strategy to restore and expand passenger rail services across Mexico. It forms part of the planned 1200km Northern Rail route, linking Mexico City with the US border at Nuevo Laredo.
