HUNGARY’s Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurth railway (GySEV) has signed a five-year extension to its current contract with the state to maintain 1195km of the national network. The company’s network almost tripled in July 2025 when it took over management of 752km of lines in western Hungary from Hungarian State Railways (MÁV).
The original contract covered a 10-year period from 2015, which was amended to include the new lines taken on in 2025. That contract now continues until December 31, 2030. It grants management rights for sections owned by the state and requires the government to reimburse GySEV for any operating losses, as well as guaranteeing certain profits.
GySEV recently started construction of a new chord at Zalaszentiván to enable direct movement of transit freight traffic through Hungary on the Amber Corridor from Rajka, on the Slovakian border, to Hodos, on the border with Slovenia, connecting with Adriatic ports.
GySEV also plans to electrify the 53km from Zalaszentiván to Nagykanizsa to enable through electric operation from Rajka to Gyékényes, on the border with Croatia, and to double track its main line between Győr and Sopron, although these projects have yet to receive funding. GySEV’s network, including lines in Austria, currently totals 1261km.
