CHENNAI Metro Rail (CMRL) has awarded Alstom a contract worth €135m to design, manufacture, supply, test and commission 32 three-car Metropolis trains for Chennai Metro Phase 2. The manufacturer will also provide maintenance for 15 years after the conclusion of the warranty period.
The new 1435mm-gauge trains will be designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru and manufactured at its plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, fulfilling Make In India domestic production requirements. Maintenance includes cleaning services, obsolescence management, and maintenance of the plant and machinery at the depot site.
Each 22.6m-long train can accommodate up to 900 passengers and are designed to operate in multiple.
Alstom is already manufacturing 36 three-car trains for use on the second phase of the city’s metro network, which will be electrified at 25kV 50Hz ac. Phase 2 covers lines 3, 4 and 5, comprising 76km of elevated and 43km of underground infrastructure. Alstom has also delivered 208 metro cars for Phase 1 of the Chennai network.
