SNCF reports strong high-speed growth
FRENCH National Railways (SNCF) says that traffic on its high-speed services grew by 14% between January and April this year compared with the same period in 2018 when SNCF was suffering from strikes. The growth equates to additional 4.5 million travellers.

Granada high-speed line to open in June
SPAIN’s national operator Renfe plans to launch high-speed services to Granada on June 24 following the completion of the new 122km line from Granada to Antequera and the approval of Spain’s Railway Safety Agency (AESF). Tickets go on sale on June 3.

JR Hokkaido plans 320km/h operation to Sapporo
HOKKAIDO Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) has submitted an application to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport seeking to raise the maximum line speed on the Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto - Sapporo extension of the Hokkaido Shinkansen from 260km/h to 320km/h.

Talgo net profit up 70% in Q1
SPANISH rolling stock manufacturer Talgo reported net revenues of €87.1m in the first quarter of 2019, a 2% increase year-on-year, while net profit of €7.1m was an increase of 70%.

Lords: HS2 needs new costs and benefits assessment
BRITAIN’s House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee published a report on May 16 which questions the economic case for HS2, the planned 338km high-speed line between London, Birmingham and the north of England. The committee says that the project should not go ahead without a new assessment of its costs and benefits.

RB Rail awards technical design contract
THE RB Rail joint venture, which is responsible for implementing the Rail Baltica high-speed project linking Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, has selected a consortium of Spanish companies Ineco and Idom Consulting to deliver the design contract for the 56km section of the route which passes through the Latvian capital Riga.

Contract awarded for Budapest - Warsaw high-speed study
HUNGARY’s Infrastructure Development Agency has awarded a contract to carry out a feasibility study for the proposed Budapest - Warsaw high-speed line to NSV Varsó, a consortium of consultancy firm Trenecon and design companies Főmterv and Utiber.
