IRJ at InnoTrans 2024: SIEMENS Mobility announced the launch of a new addition to its signalling portfolio during a press conference at Messe Berlin on September 23, ahead of the official opening of InnoTrans.
Through Signalling X, Siemens is aiming to centralise all rail infrastructure data from long-distance inter-city and urban traffic into a single cloud-based, hardware-independent signalling data centre. The system will offer seamless control and operation of both mainline and mass transit signalling applications and systems from one centralised signalling data centre that is powered by standard hardware.
The data centre also enables the management of both safety-critical and non-safety-critical applications developed by Siemens using standard APIs, opening interfaces to diagnostic and optimisation systems, including train planning systems, in a single cloud environment.
“This offers significant operational improvements for railway operators and leads to unparalleled flexibility through virtualisation and georedundancy,” says Mr Andre Rodenbeck, CEO of rail infrastructure at Siemens Mobility.
Siemens’ Distributed Smart Safe System (DS3), introduced in 2020, is the basis of the new platform, which Siemens says enables relevant applications to "run safely" within a “cybersecure environment in the cloud.” DS3 is in place in Austria and Spain while Siemens recently secured a contract to rollout the system in Finland.
The system is limited to Siemens’ signalling systems and does not support those developed by competitors.
