The plant was established by Morrison Knudson subsidiary MK Rail in 1972 and acquired by Wabtec in 1999. The facility largely produces diesel locomotives for commuter rail operators in North America, although it has also supplied freight locomotives for customers in the US and internationally.
Wabtec now plans to transfer MPI locomotive production to Pennsylvania, although some functions will remain at Boise.
“It is largely the manufacturing work that will be consolidated into our plant in Erie,” Wabtec spokeswoman Mrs Deia Campanelli told the Idaho Statesman by on September 19. “We will continue to maintain ownership of the facility, and some of the engineering, programme management and services teams located in Boise will remain.”
Wabtec acquired the Erie plant through its merger with GE, which was completed in February.
