NOUVELLE Aquitaine region in southwestern France is currently financing station upgrades in preparation for the introduction this month of additional Alstom-built double-deck Régio 2N EMUs to Bordeaux’s commuter network. This will allow multiple operation in the peaks and a significant boost to weekend services.
The region, Bordeaux Métropole and the Gironde département are spending just over €4m on each station, including platform lengthening and raising the height to 55cm. Major work is also taking place at Bassens and Vayres stations.
The move comes after the introduction of an hourly all-stations service on the Libourne - Bordeaux - Arcachon route, as Bordeaux develops its Serm, an RER-style network with frequent commuter trains on cross-city routes.
Saint Loubès station has already seen 91% growth in traffic since 2019, to 186,165 passengers in 2024, and growth of 256% is expected by 2030. Saint Suplice-Izon has seen 71% growth to 166,353 passengers ,with 215% growth expected by 2030.
Bordeaux was one of the first French cities to start creating a Serm, which will eventually consist of three lines totalling 300km.
