A consortium led by Korea’s national operator Korail has won a $US 13m contract to manage the modernisation of Peru’s 128.7km Huancayo - Huancavelica line. The deal covers design review and construction management of the Tren Macho in the central Andes.
The project includes track renewal, signalling upgrades, introduction of new rolling stock and modernised stations, with the aim of improving safety, reliability and travel times on one of South America’s highest-altitude railways. The contract forms part of a wider railway modernisation programme valued at approximately $US 565m.
KNR’s consortium, including Korean engineering firm Dohwa together with Peruvian partner companies, was selected ahead of competing bids from Spain and Japan, achieving the highest scores in both technical and commercial evaluations.
The contract is one of the first major rail engineering and project management contracts won by a Korean organisation in Latin America a region identified by Korail as a strategic growth market. It intends to leverage its Peruvian success to support Korean engineering, consulting and technology firms pursuing opportunities in countries including Colombia, Panama and El Salvador.
