PROGRESS Rail has signed three contracts worth a combined $US 232m with Egyptian National Railways (ENR) to refurbish, supply spare parts and provide technical services for diesel-electric locomotives.
Under the first contract worth $US 185m, Progress Rail will upgrade 100 AA22T locomotives. It will also supply spare parts for 141 locomotives over 15 years under a separate agreement worth $US 42m, and provide technical services for the 141 locomotives under a five-year contract worth $US 5m.
The contracts were signed in in Cairo on April 9 by ENR chairman, Mohamed Abdel Aziz Amer, and Progress Rail executive vice-president for locomotives, Jack Zhang. Kamel Al-Wazir, Egypt’s deputy prime minister for industrial development, and minister of industry transport, was also in attendance,
“This locomotive modernisation programme will extend the existing assets’ useful life by up to 20 years, while updating the control and engine system to achieve significant fuel savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions,” Zhang says.
“This project will further strengthen our long history of collaboration with ENR to support Egypt’s need to improve transport capacity, as well as enhance job opportunities while receiving the latest technologies and components from the US.”
