THE introduction of a direct Switzerland - London passenger service is one step closer after three passenger operators signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on the project.
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), French National Railways (SNCF) subsidiary SNCF Passenger and Eurostar signed the MoU, which is described as an important milestone in the long-term planning to introduce the new service, which is expected at some point in the 2030s.
Under the MoU, the partners will analyse potential timetables and operational concepts, the results of which will be used to define key steps for introducing the service. Further steps required include establishing entry formalities, formalising inter-governmental agreements, securing access to infrastructure, and securing rolling stock and track access agreements.
A previous inter-governmental MoU signed in May 2025 aimed to develop direct services between Britain and Switzerland. SBB and SNCF confirmed plans to explore additional international services when extending the agreement to operate TGV Lyria services in March.
London is currently the top destination for flights from Switzerland and SBB, SNCF Passenger and Eurostar say there is significant potential to connect Switzerland with London by rail. Studies have shown that journey times of 6 hours between Zürich and London, 5.5 hours from Geneva, and 5 hours from Basle would meet market demand and passenger expectations for such a service.
