THE tender to construct and equip the initial section of the new fully automated Line 10 of the Naples Metro has been formally awarded.
Managed by Naples’ regional transport operator EAV, the tender covers the delivery of the predominately underground metro line that will eventually link the Naples Afragola high-speed station in the north of the city with the Casavatore, Casoria and Afragola districts. The initial 6.5km section will run from Di Vittorio to Afragola Centro via Casoria Centro, all three stations being new.
An additional four stations will be partially constructed on this alignment during this phase for completion under the second phase of the project, which will add another five stations and extend the line by 7.3km to its terminus at Principe Umberto station in the city centre at to the high-speed station at Afragola. Financing for this phase is yet to be confirmed.
The project is being delivered by EAV in partnership with the Campania Region, the Municipality of Naples and transport authority Acamir, following approval by Italy’s Higher Council of Public Works and confirmation of funding from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Two lots
The tender is divided into two main lots. Lot 1, covering detailed design and civil works, has been awarded to a consortium led by Webuild, working alongside Consorzio Stabile Eteria, Costruire ICM and Naples Metro.
The first phase of this lot is valued at around €660m. The contract includes an exclusive option to conduct the second phase of the project for a total value of more than €1.7bn, subject to future financing. Works will be delivered predominantly underground using both traditional excavation methods and tunnel boring machines (TBM).
Lot 2, which includes design, systems, rolling stock and maintenance, has been awarded to a consortium led by CAF, working alongside Leonardo, Mermec, AET and Ventura. The base contract is valued at €259m, with the total value, including options, potentially exceeding €630m.
This lot covers the delivery of CBTC at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) with CAF set to supply its Optio CBTC system in what the supplier says is its first deployment on a fully automated metro. The contract also includes power supply, telecommunications, platform screen doors, a new operations control centre, and a fleet of three-car driverless trains based on CAF’s Inneo platform.
Initial funding for Line 10 amounts to €1.2bn, comprising €870m allocated to the project by the Municipality of Naples and €330m from the Campania Region under the 2021-2027 European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) programme. If the options for extensions are exercised, the overall investment could reach €3.1bn.
