LILLE’s metropolitan government (MEL) has selected Alstom to supply 15 additional 52m-long rubber-tyred automatic metro trains under a contract worth €210m.
The new trains will replace all of the remaining VAL-208 trains used on Line 1 of the Lille metro network from 2028 and add to the 27 trains already supplied by Alstom and used across lines 1 and 2. The trains will be equipped with Alstom’s Urbalis Fluence automatic train-to-train communication system, the first time the system has been deployed. Alstom says it will improve the train’s autonomy and the line’s overall performance, maintaining headways of just 66 seconds.
The new trains will have capacity for 545 passengers and feature open gangways, with dedicated areas for passengers with reduced mobility. Design and assembly will take place at six of Alstom’s 16 sites in France.
